GDAL/OGR provides a generic API and a set of tools for geospatial data access to imagery formats (GDAL) and vector format (OGR). It is an essential component of any geographical information system that is used at the base of several software packages from the geomatics domain, including Open source software such as MapServer. GDAL/OGR is also used and supported by several software vendors including ESRI, Google Earth, Safe Software (FME) and dozens of others.

Daniel Morissette has been involved in the development of the GDAL/OGR project since its inception. He is, among other things, the author of the MITAB driver (MapInfo TAB / MIF) and is a member of the GDAL/OGR project steering committee (PSC).
